**Machuca**

Set in Chile in the early 1970s, *Machuca* takes place during a period of intense political and social change. At the time, President Salvador Allende was attempting to build a more equal society through socialist reforms, including education reform and efforts to reduce inequality. The story follows two boys from very different backgrounds. Gonzalo grows up in a wealthy, privileged family, while Pedro comes from a poor neighborhood on the edge of the city. They meet when a private school—experimenting with social integration—opens its doors to children from lower-income families. Despite their differences, the two boys gradually form a close friendship. Through each other, they begin to see a world they had never truly understood before. However, outside the school, Chile is becoming increasingly unstable. Political tensions rise, society becomes deeply divided, and everyday life starts to feel uncertain. This period eventually leads to the military coup of 1973, when General Augusto Pinochet overthrows Allende’s government and begins a long military dictatorship. Against this backdrop, the boys’ friendship is slowly tested by fear, violence, and the collapse of the world around them. *Machuca* is a quiet but powerful coming-of-age story about friendship, class division, and how large historical forces shape individual lives.
